AFI Atlanta reviews
AFI - House of Blues Las Vegas
The great thing about seeing a show at HOB LV is being able to stay at Mandalay Bay and due to rules governing all ages shows next to the casino you don't have to wait up all evening to get to the main act. I was disappointed with the opening act, Ceremony, they were trying to channel Black Flag or something. Unlike Boise some of the AFI fans started to heckle them, but to give credit they did seem to have a fan base. Hey, the important thing was AFI, saw them in Chicago and Oakland last year and they were still trying to get the set list to work. The good thing was saw them in Boise and Las Vegas and the set list really incorporates the new with the old stuff without losing momentum. There was a huge amount of energy from the band and the audience, everyone had a great time, Davey was interacting with the crowd who actually got to sing along with several of the songs. Now that the set works so well I would highly recommend seeing them live to even casual fans or new fans to Crash Love. The nice thing about AFI is that each of their albums are a little different and when they play a show you get to hear how they have evolved and changed their sound.
Invest!
Let me start this review by saying that I am in no way a professional artist. I am just a working stiff that attends 20-30 different shows each year. AFI needs to invest in back up singers to support Davey or maybe even a cool local choir for a few songs. Davey has carried this band on his back for the past 10 years with his voice and unfortunately that has taken it's toll.
The music itself was decent however, very easy to get caught up in all of the memories each vintage song brings. A few tweaks and this could have been one amazing show.
This was the first time I had the chance of seeing one of my all time favorite bands and I was thoroughly disappointed. They didn't seem interested in being there at all and they FLEW through their setlist like they had better things to do. Fair, everyone's job sucks sometimes, but there were tons of people that gathered just to see YOU. Crushed.
The Fox is a great venue and the floor plan ain't bad--that's why I really enjoy coming here. That and the floor-stationed bars.
Overall, this review is for THIS show and I'm hoping it is not a reflection on how the band always is.
One of the best
This was one of the best shows I have been to. I have been listening to AFI for well over a decade but never got to see them live. I really hope I get to see them live again. They played a few songs from there new album and the rest were singles off almost every other album. They played for a little over an hour which is usual. I have a playlist that goes four hours of just their music so it could have been longer but no one really performs more than an hour so no complaint. If you like AFI then certainly see them live
Fair bordering on good
The opening band sound wise eluded me. The first song sounded like a mix between Duran Duran's Hungry Like a Wolf and something from Depeche Mode. Not bad I like both, but it went downhill from there. The rest of the set was a mix of way too much synth, over processed guitar and vocals I couldn't hear. Zero energy on the stage. The robots at Chuckie Cheese have more energy and character.
As far as AFI goes, I was surprised at such a short set. It ran about an hour on the dot. The set list was good and I'll give credit to both AFI and the Sound Guys at the Filmore. The house sound sounded great. Ending the set with Rise of the Phoenix is a good touch, it sends the crowd off on a high note. Had AFI's set been 90 minutes I could easily overlook an opening band that made no sense, but a show that lasts 2 hours and 15min start to finish is a letdown hence the 3 star review.
